May Reading List

I’ve got a pretty varied line-up of books this month, and I couldn’t be more excited! Finding reading time is becoming more difficult as Clark gets older, so I’m not able to finish books off quite as quickly as I could when I was feeding him ’round the clock with nothing to do but sit and read. Still, I’ve been able to squeeze in some time here and there. These books should be showing up in my Elevenses posts in the next few months (with the exception of Crossroads of Twilight because I’m reeeeally behind on reviewing the series), so if you haven’t read them and want to join in the discussion, pick up a copy and read along with me! Eventually, I’d like to have a sort of virtual book club thing going here — because book discussions are the BEST.

Have you read any of these books? Do you have any suggestions for what I should pick up in June? Let me know in the comments below!

Without further ado, here is my May reading list.

1) Dark Whispers

If you’ve read this blog at all in the past, you’ll know that I’ve waited a long time to read this book. “Dark Whispers” is book three in the Unicorn Chronicles, a series by Bruce Coville. My mom got it for me as a Christmas gift, and I’m so excited to start reading it. The series is out of print, and the last two books are especially difficult to find. If you want to give them a go, I’d recommend looking on eBay or at your local library. You can read my Elevenses post about books one and two here.

2) Crossroads of Twilight

As I mentioned above, I’m really behind on posting about this series. “Crossroads of Twilight” is book ten of the Wheel of Time, and so far I’ve only made an Elevenses post for book one.  Oops! This series is so magical (Ha!) that I haven’t been able to put it down, which means I have had absolutely no self control when it comes to picking up the next book. I keep meaning to press pause on the series while I catch up, but every time I finish a book I can’t help but immediately pick up the next one! You can read my Elevenses post of book one here.

3) Perfectly Yourself

I’m trying to get in the habit of doing some spiritual reading every month, and this month I decided to pick up “Perfectly Yourself,” by Matthew Kelly. I’ve read Matthew Kelly’s work before and listened to quite a few of his talks, and I’m always impressed. I’ve already read the first few chapters of this one, and as always, I feel like he could be writing directly to me. This book deals with failure and the never ending cycle we seem to get into (i.e., sit on the sofa and binge watch Netflix rather than work on difficult things that would be more fulfilling in the long run).

4) The Art of War

Okay, okay, this is a bit of a strange choice. Brian made fun of me for it, but I do have my reasons! As well as doing some spiritual reading, I also wanted to get in the habit of reading nonfiction. “The Art of War,” is not only a classic, but it will also be really helpful to me when I start constructing battle scenes in my book (spoiler, there will be at least one large scale battle in book two!). I’ll let you know if there is any deeper insight to be found in it once I’m done.  I started this one last week, and so far it has actually been pretty interesting.

5) Sword Art Online: Fairy Dance, Book 4

Sword Art Online is an incredibly popular anime series, based on a light novel series of the same name. Brian is big into anime, and this is the first series that he ever talked me into watching — and I loved it. It has just enough fantasy, just enough action, and the perfect dose of suuuper cute romance. Brian bought me the first two light novels for Christmas a couple years ago, and I’ve been pining for books three and four ever since. Lucky for me, Brian got them for me as a birthday gift last week! I’m almost finished with book three and will be moving on to book four in a day or so. In the meantime, I’m planning on doing an Elevenses post for books one and two soon.
