Anniversary at Newport Beach

A few weeks ago, Brian and I traveled down to Newport Beach, CA for our one year wedding anniversary. The trip was a blast and I, of course, took lots of pictures! I thought it might be fun to share a few here on the blog.

During our trip we stayed at the Hyatt Regency. We found a great deal online (which is why we were able to afford it), and while our room was average, the hotel itself was the fanciest thing I have ever seen. Like, there was a giant chess set. And three pools. And a golf course! We definitely spent a full day of our vacation doing nothing but exploring the hotel.

After exploring Balboa Island, we rode the ferry out to the peninsula so that we could do some more exploring coast-side. The ferry was hilarious, and sketchy, and awesome. It looked like a little pallet boat–the kind Huck Finn might ride down a river–and could carry three cars at a time, as well as a handful of pedestrians and bicyclists.

Despite being a little strange, I’m pretty sure the ferry might have been my favorite part of the whole trip! Maybe I’m just a little strange myself?

It was pretty bright, so our very first souvenirs were two pairs of new sunglasses. I loved this shop’s yellow door!

Can you believe that Brian and I had never ridden a ferris wheel together before this trip? The moment I saw this one, I knew that riding it was something we simply had to do. Plus, I got to check a little something off my bucket list in the process! 😉

This braid. I don’t know why I’m so pleased with it. I asked Brian to take a picture of the back of my head so that I could make sure it turned out alright. And it did! Here is proof for all the doubters that it is indeed possible to french braid short hair.

We went to the Crab Cooker for dinner one night, on my mom’s recommendation (she used to spend her summers at Newport). It was so good! Plus, I loved the funky ambiance.

On the night of our anniversary, we rode our bikes out to Corona del Mar to see the tide pools. My phone died (of course) so there are no pictures of that event! We ended up getting there at high tide, so the tide pools were all under water, and as we were searching for them, we nearly got trapped in a little cove!

We stopped at a candy store on the way back to the hotel to grab some goodies to eat with a movie. As you can see above, my cupcake didn’t quite make the return trip, crammed in my backpack as it was. But it still tasted just as good!

I brought my wedding veil with me to wear on our anniversary. I was going to wear it as a scarf or something for the fancy dinner we had planned for our anniversary night. Plans change though, and we ended up getting sushi at the mall instead (which was totally worth it!).

I decided that, since I packed my veil, I absolutely had to wear it, fancy dinner or no. So, I popped it on and wore it for movies and candy in bed!

We bought this little dragon at the candy store, and I decided to let him travel with his head sticking out of my backpack. Because he’s cute? Who said adults can’t have stuffed animals!

All in all, our trip to California was amazing. It’s funny how, after months and months of planning, the trip itself seemed to blow by so fast. By the time we pulled our vacation weary bodies through the front door of our house, I couldn’t quite decide if I was happy to be home, or melancholic that it was all over. Of one thing, I am sure. I can’t wait to go back.

I miss the ocean already.
